Sponsoring the Students

31st August 2016

Cirrus are proud to continue their third year of sponsorship of the motorsport department at Liverpool University who compete in the UK Formula Student championship.

Formula Student is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Backed by industry and high profile engineers such as Patron Ross Brawn OBE, the competition aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers.

Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car in order to compete in static and dynamic events, which demonstrate their understanding in research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management and finances. Formula student is an international competition, with events taking place in the USA, Australasia, Brazil, Italy, UK, Austria, Germany and Japan. The University of Liverpool Formula Student Team comprises of a mix of 23 third and fourth year Engineering Students who design, build and race a single seat, open wheel race car.

This year’s car was powered by a 600cc Yamaha R6 Engine, and featured carbon fibre body work, a fully integrated aerodynamic wing package, and electronically adjustable anti-roll bars.

A key objective of this year’s car was to minimise build time. This was achieved using the professional services and sponsorship of Cirrus Laser for a second consecutive year, by providing the team with material and cutting services.

As a result, the team were also able to design parts to intricate shapes and therefore increase material utilisation, to reduce the overall weight of the car. The team successfully took part in Formula Student UK from the 13th -17th July. This year the car and team performed exceptionally, achieving the highest place finish in the University’s history; with an overall finish of 15th out of 107 teams and 3rd amongst UK teams. The team are in no doubt that this result could not have been achieved without the sponsorship provided by Cirrus Laser, and we look forward to continuing the partnership.

Llyr Jones, team leader at the University said "Once again, thank you very much for your support. It is very much appreciated by us all here from the University of Liverpool Motorsport Team!"
